By providing our patients with on-site imaging services, Regional Urology can provide expedited, comprehensive, and state of the art urologic care. We are able to rapidly diagnose certain conditions such as kidney stones, allowing prompt treatment with no delay, when indicated. Our in-house radiologist enables prompt viewing and reading of studies helping to expedite care.
Imaging services provided at Regional Urology include MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and CT (Computed tomography). Read below to learn more about these various tests.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic tool used for non-invasive imaging and will be instrumental in providing a more accurate and timely diagnoses of diseases and ailments ranging from prostate cancer to ruptured tendons in the foot. The MRI installed at Regional Urology is a 3.0T, which is the most powerful MRI in the Ark-La-Tex. A 3.0T has a greater signal-to-noise ratio, which generates a higher quality image than its 1.5T counterparts. Clearer images lead to more accurate diagnoses which in turn saves more lives. The MRI is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). We are accepting outside referral scans and are currently able to image abdomen, ankle, brain, foot, pelvis, prostate, shoulder, knee, neck (C spine) lumbar spine, and thoracic spine.

Computer Tomography (CT) Scan
Computed Tomography (CT scan or CAT scan) uses a form of radiation to create a 3-dimensional image of the body. It has superior imaging quality when compared to standard x-rays or ultrasound. A CT can be used for a variety of reasons ranging from the diagnosis of kidney stones to the work-up of various cancers. Sometimes contrast is given through a vein prior to CT scan to improve imaging of certain organs.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound (US) uses sound waves to create 3-dimensional images of various organs including the kidneys and bladder. It is similar to sonar. Ultrasounds do not expose patients to radiation, which is a benefit. However, it does not provide as clear an image as some other tests (such as CT). It is a painless and safe test.

X-Ray
An X-ray, also referred to as a plain film, uses a very small form of radiation to image internal body structures. It is a quick and painless test. X-rays can be used to image the abdomen (KUB) and this is often used to follow kidney stones. A chest X-ray images the lungs and heart. With use of contrast, X-rays can also be used to image other structures such as the bladder (cystogram) or the urethra (urethrogram).
